Sasang Constitution Type Medicine is a Korean creative constitutional medicine, established by Je-Ma Lee, the prestigious medical specialist in the latter Yi(Chosun) dynasty. It distinguished body types of mankind into four different categories based on the philosophy of Confucianism, which was absolutely different from the previous oriental medicine based on Yin and Yang.
In Sasang Constitution Type Medicine, people have diverse appearances, personalities and biological & clinical characteristics, which govern what type of medical treatment has to be applied to each person. And as an original Korean clinic, it has an object of making people live in a harmonized way by understanding one’s own constitution type, enlarging the advantage of it, and supplementing its insufficiency. Taeyangin This type is likely to be skinny and hard to get weight due to its weak function of absorbing and digesting foods, caused by spending too much energy while pulling up its vigor to the upper body. However, there can be some cases to get weight, made by improper circulation of the body by pulling up too much vigor upwards or giving vent to one’s anger. Therefore, it is strongly recommended to soothe mind, avoid foods of high calories and try to have plain foods. The type also needs to strengthen its lower body for a physical balance. Soyangin When comparing with its enough diet, this type seems to be a bit skinny. It has strong digestion ability but its kidneys are weak and don’t do proper water evacuation and urination. The type has a high fever in the upper body and weak function in the lower body. Therefore, it is important to lower temperature and vigor in the head and chest, and to supplement Yin on the lower body to make a smooth evacuation. It is also strongly recommended to soothe one’s temper all the time. And as a good work out, strain the abdomen and slowly proceed the lower body exercises. Abdominal Breathing and Meditation are also recommendable.
Taeeumin This typed person is relaxed always and has good appetites, so easily becoming obese. He or she is also greed and tends to overeat, hence, without sufficient physical exercises, one can get geriatric diseases and obesity in turn. The circulation of vigor of the Taeeumin is also not working well, so eating clean and plain foods, and avoiding overeating and high-protein & low-calorie foods are recommended. Exercises, such as climbing, jogging, walking, dancing, aerobic, and everything which can be done slowly and gradually, will burn out fats of the body. It also helps one have a healthier life through sweating by taking a bath and working out.
Soeumin Having weak digestion, the type does not gain weight easily. Eating oily or cold foods will be harmful for the typed person’s digestion. People in this type also cannot eat a lot and is poor at enduring coldness. Therefore, it is important to make the body warm all the time and to eat warm foods for better digestion. It is also necessary to prevent from sweating because this typed person lacks blood. Especially, this type has a weaker physical strength than other three constitutional types, hence, needs to balance its exercise amount, keeping one’s own limitation carefully. If the person works out over his limit, the one may reach to total exhaustion.
